Posted about 4 years ago

October 2, 2021 is Ostomy Awareness Day and Ostomy Education Day (from the WOCN):

Join us on Saturday, October 2, 10 am - 5:15 pm ET for WOCN® Ostomy Education Day! This event is a free online experience aimed at celebrating ostomy awareness, dispelling myths, and increasing ostomy education to improve patient outcomes. This full day of engagement and education will feature eight (8) sessions brought to you by experienced wound, ostomy, and continence (WOC) nursing professionals and subject matter experts and will award a total of 6.75 Contact Hours.

Upon completion of the event, learners will be able to:

  1. Explore myths of ostomy experience and themes of ostomy science research and associated findings.
  2. Describe at least 3 best practices to promote healthy peristomal skin.
  3. Demonstrate how to choose products to minimize leaks by understanding the principles of pouching.
  4. Integrate focused ostomy care counseling for dietary modifications and activity that will promote optimal health, healing and quality of life.
  5. Initiate discussions pertaining to the sexual concerns of the patient with an ostomy; identify situations for which specific suggestions for intimacy or referral for more intensive therapy are indicated.
  6. Describe benefits and guidelines for preoperative stoma site marking.
  7. Better prioritize essential teaching points for patients following ostomy surgery, building on prior knowledge.
  8. Use the Peristomal Skin Assessment Guide (PSAG) to support differential assessment and management of common peristomal skin complications.

WOCN® Ostomy Education Day is funded through an educational grant from Hollister Incorporated.
The WOCN Society does not endorse or support products or services.
