We know learning ostomy care takes time and patients are often discharged quickly with ERAS protocols nowadays. Not every patient has access to an ostomy specialist after discharge, but there are many resources available to help patients achieve self-care. The attached document will help you educate your patients about these resources. Some additional clinical information is listed below:
- United Ostomy Association has videos by Joy Hooper on ileostomy, colostomy, and urostomy. They are located under “My Ostomy” in the Ostomy Information section.
- UOAA has info on how Ostomy Nurses can use and support the Ostomy Bill of Rights and info for Home Health Nurses www.ostomy.org/nurse-home-health-information/
- You can order free copies of the UOAA's New Ostomy Patient Guide at www.ostomy.org/new-ostomy-patient-guide .
- Physicians who are members of American College of Surgeons can purchase the Ostomy Skills kit for their patients for $5.00; spread the word to your docs!
